Learn how to identify the characteristics and motivational needs of the gifted learner with a Master of Education, Curriculum & Instruction – Concentration in Special Education in Gifted Education online from ULM. In this 100% online gifted education focused program, you will be able to design appropriate learning and performance modifications that enhance creativity, acceleration, depth and complexity in academic instruction for gifted individuals.
You will examine the theoretical and instructional nature of students’ affective needs, analyze the instructional needs of exceptional children and learn how to apply instructional strategies and curricular modifications within regular and special classrooms. You will also assess diagnostic data for student achievement, in as few as 15 months.
This program meets the prescribed coursework requirements to earn the Academically Gifted Endorsement add-on endorsement from the Louisiana Department of Education.*

Online Program Admission Requirements
- Teaching certificate
- Must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Submission of official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities
- Applicants should have earned grades of C or better on all previous graduate course work
Regular Admissions
- Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and above (based on a 4.0 scale), from a regionally accredited university
- 3.0 on last 60 hours of undergraduate course work from a regionally accredited university
OR
Conditional Admission
- Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 and above (based on a 4.0 scale), from regionally accredited university
- 2.75 on last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework from a regionally accredited university
- Minimum formula score of 622.6 (2.2 GPA X 283 GRE)
- Scores 5 years or newer accepted only from ETS. Scores over 5 years are only accepted if they are on-file in the ULM Banner system.

Program Requirements
Applicants to all M.Ed. C&I concentrations must hold a valid teacher's certificate in a field complimentary to the graduate concentration issued by Louisiana State Department of Education or its equivalent. A total of 36 semester hours must be earned for the degree regardless of concentration chosen. Successful candidates are eligible for a Teacher Leader endorsement.

EDLE 5000: Teacher Leader I: Educational Research
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Emphasizes application of research methods in PK-12 setting, the collection and assessment of diagnostic data for student achievement, and the study of existing research and instructional strategies.
SPED 5075: Learning Characteristics of Gifted Students
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Designed to assist in the identification of the characteristics and motivational needs of the gifted learner. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.
CURR 5018: Technology Integration and Portfolio Development
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Explores technologies that are presently being used as educational tools and prepares students for technology use beyond the computer-based information systems. Prerequisites: 4083 or CSCI 5003 or permission from department head.
SPED 5076: Methods and Materials for Teaching Gifted and Talented
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Designed to present methods of instruction, curriculum development and materials appropriate to the needs of gifted students in the regular and special class.
SPED 5078: Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Examines the theoretical and instructional nature of students' affective needs. Designed for education personnel responsible for gifted learners. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.
CURR 5073: Assessment and Accountability
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Designed for evaluating learning systems with emphasis on constructing measures to evaluate progress and outcomes in social, affective and cognitive areas.
SPED 5074: Developing Creativity in the Classroom
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
An examination of the theoretical and practical nature of creativity and techniques to develop and nurture creativity in the classroom. Designed for teachers of gifted children, general education teachers, counselors and/or administrators. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.
SPED 5050: Effective Consultation
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Designed to build competencies of educators in consultation skills with educational administrators, ancillary personnel, teachers, parents, students and other professionals.
CURR 5023: Research-Based Instruction
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Designed to prepare candidates to incorporate methods, content, materials and research in their instructional areas of expertise with emphasis upon integration of research-based methodology in the classroom. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.
SPED 5045: Educational Techniques for Exceptional Children in General Classrooms
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Analyses the instructional needs of exceptional children and the application of instructional strategies and curricular modifications within regular classrooms. A. Elementary; B. Secondary. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.
EDLE 5005: Teacher Leader II: Improving School Performance
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Performance-based course to develop teacher leaders to enhance student achievement. Issues and performances emphasize the practice of leadership in the school culture, instructional settings, curriculum, team activities, decision making, communication and learning communities.
SPED 5077: Gifted and Talented Practicum
Duration: 8 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Supervised experience with gifted children. Must meet all other eligibility requirements for Louisiana Teaching Certificate in field of study to earn graduate credit and grade. Prerequisites: SPED 5075, SPED 5076 and approval of director of field experiences.
