This 100% online program will prepare you to work with multidisciplinary teams at the district level to administer standardized tests to determine areas of exceptional or delayed ability.

In this accelerated program, you will study learning systems with emphasis on constructing measures to evaluate progress and outcomes in social, affective and cognitive areas. You’ll also study assessment strategies, types of clinical tests, their uses and how to interpret results.

Teaching certificate with teaching experience in two areas of disabilities
Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions

Online Program Admission Requirements

  • Teaching certificate with teaching experience in two areas of disabilities: Mild/Moderate (counts as two), intellectual disabilities, ADD, learning disabilities, autism, etc.
  • One year teaching experience in Special Education (shown as teacher of record)
    • Experience in special education must be listed on teaching credentials
  • Must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Submission of official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities
  • Applicants should have earned grades of C or better on all previous graduate course work

Regular Admissions

  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and above (based on a 4.0 scale), from a regionally accredited university
  • OR

  • 3.0 on last 60 hours of undergraduate course work from a regionally accredited university

Conditional Admission

  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 and above (based on a 4.0 scale), from regionally accredited university
  • OR

  • 2.75 on last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework from a regionally accredited university
  • OR

  • Minimum formula score of 622.6 (2.2 GPA X 283 GRE)
    • Scores 5 years or newer accepted only from ETS. Scores over 5 years are only accepted if they are on-file in the ULM Banner system.

Program Requirements

Applicants to all M.Ed. C&I concentrations, except English as a Second Language (ESL), must hold a valid teacher's certificate in a field complimentary to the graduate concentration issued by Louisiana State Department of Education or its equivalent. A total of 36 semester hours must be earned for the degree regardless of concentration chosen. Successful candidates also earn their endorsement for Teacher Leader.

Emphasizes application of research methods in PK-12 setting, the collection and assessment of diagnostic data for student achievement, and the study of existing research and instructional strategies.

Focuses on diagnostic and prescriptive processes to meet the educational needs of exceptional children. Formal testing, curriculum-based assessment and teaching, and translation of needs into educational programming are studied. Prerequisites: 5061 or approval from department head; valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.

Explores technologies that are presently being used as educational tools and prepares students for technology use beyond the computer-based information systems. Prerequisites: 4083 or CSCI 5003 or permission from department head.

Designed to build competencies of educators in consultation skills with educational administrators, ancillary personnel, teachers, parents, students and other professionals.

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Focuses on types of clinical tests, their uses and interpretation of results with emphasis on the problems of evaluating exceptional children. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.

Addresses research and application of knowledge of learning theories as they apply to information processing, instructional practices and motivation.

Designed to study students' special instructional needs in reading. The aspects of identification, diagnosis of reading needs, specialized methods of instruction, appropriate materials, and modifications in reading are considered. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator. (Same as SPED 5001).

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Analysis of the instructional needs of exceptional children and the application of instructional strategies and curricular modifications within regular classrooms. A. Elementary; B. Secondary. Prerequisites: valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.

Designed for evaluating learning systems with emphasis on constructing measures to evaluate progress and outcomes in social, affective and cognitive areas.

Performance-based course to develop teacher leaders to enhance student achievement. Issues and performances emphasize the practice of leadership in the school culture, instructional settings, curriculum, team activities, decision making, communication and learning communities.

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Designed for advanced study of tests, techniques and methods specific to diagnosis of learner peculiarities of exceptional children. Emphasis is placed on administration, interpretation and the formulation of appropriate education programs. An array of testing procedures will be addressed. Prerequisites: SPED 5061 or Counseling 5062 or Psychology 4051; valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from certification coordinator.

Duration: 8 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

A supervised experience in assessing and identifying students with special needs. Prerequisites: approval of director of field experiences. Must meet all other eligibility requirements for Louisiana Teaching Certificate in field of study to earn graduate credit and grade.
