What do students learn in your classes? What is the expected outcome?

Learning is a process of developing potential by applying what you know. In online courses, students are guided through relevant experiences and projects to develop skills that lead to proposing and implementing individualized projects.

Why did you start teaching?

Few activities are more enjoyable, challenging and, ultimately, rewarding than learning. Learning shapes us and our future opportunities.

As a teacher, I savor that challenge – the stretching of the mind – to achieve what may have seemed not conceptually possible.

What advice would you give to those considering this online degree program?

If you enjoy learning and challenges, this course is for you. Nearly all of the work involves working and reflecting on practical projects that allow you to use the internet effectively for any type of educational or training purpose. Those projects become part of your evolving online portfolio.

What qualities make someone particularly successful in education?

Curiosity, perseverance and flexibility will make you successful in an environment of rapid change. Expect to adjust to the needs of learning and workforce development as the internet becomes even more relevant in how we learn and become trained.

What do you think is the biggest challenge that educators face today?

The number and variety of opportunities are amazing. To recognize what is possible, it's necessary to have an open mind and be willing to explore new ideas, strategies and resources. What's “good enough" is not good enough. Anyone in this profession needs to learn to excel.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values" by Robert M. Pirsig

Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know about you.

Years ago, every U.S. naval ship and submarine had in its library a CD-ROM, video-based software that my company developed for tying knots.
